In praise of dentist 

On a Saturday afternoon a number of weeks ago, my young daughter was playing with some of her friends in the garden. I heard a hysterical scream at about 4.10pm - all mums know their child's cry don't they? and can judge the seriousness of the incident?

My daughter had fallen and smashed all her front teeth about half way down.

Her first words to me were, "Will they grow back?" I had to explain they wouldn't, but we would do our best to get them sorted.

We have always attended the dentist regularly and looked after her teeth having them coated etc. I immediately rang the out of hours dentist at Mexborough (4.15-ish) explaining that the teeth were sharp and that my daughter was in pain.

They said they were closing at 5pm and made an appointment for my daughter the following day at 1.30pm.

I rang a local dentist for advice: Andrew Newton of The Willows Dental Practice in Belton.

I apologised for ringing but explained what had happened and how concerned I was about my daughter. He said the appointment for the following day was too late and that I had to take my daughter to him in ten minutes.

He and his wife very kindly opened their surgery for my daughter. Mr Newton and his wife (acting as dental nurse!) x-rayed and then sealed my daughter's teeth.

Mr Newton explained what could be done to rebuild the teeth in the future. Whilst sat in the dental chair, my daughter's face changed from anguish to calm and her cheeky smile returned!

Mr and Mrs Newton, I would publicly like to express our sincere gratitude for your kindness and consideration.

You are indeed a dentist in shining armour - somehow thank you doesn't seem enough for such a deed!
